Interactive Interface Designs

ElysianTown

The centrepiece of this project is ElysianTown, a virtual horror town where users must adhere to a series of strict rules to explore and uncover its dark secrets. Targeting horror enthusiasts, the project offers an immersive narrative environment that not only captivates users but also invites them to contribute to the evolving story, thereby deepening their engagement.

Background

Interactive storytelling has become central in digital media, allowing users to actively shape narrative outcomes. Unlike traditional linear narratives, this approach makes users active participants, which is especially impactful in the horror genre, enhancing emotional intensity and immersion. Rule-based horror, a subgenre, adds to this interactivity by imposing strict rules that heighten tension as users navigate the narrative.

Design philosophy

World-Building
The website establishes a rich and detailed world with its own history, culture, and lore. The town is shrouded in mystery, unfolds as visitor interact with the site.

Rule-Based Horror
The town operates under strict rules that users must navigate to uncover its secrets. These rules are not just thematic but are embedded into the website’s functionality, influencing how users interact with the content and how the story progresses.

User Interaction and Contribution
Users are not passive participants; they are invited to contribute by creating their own characters and stories within the framework of the town’s rules. These contributions are subject to approval and, once accepted, become part of the town’s expanding narrative universe.
